From Life to Life Eternal: Discussing Death as People of Faith

How we deal with the end of our lives has significant impact on the health care industry, the government and our society. Even more, it affects our finances, our families and our faith. The Church has much to say about life, death and life eternal. Yet often the Church has difficulty dealing with the complexities of end-of-life issues. We wish to offer words of comfort but don’t know what to say. We want to help a grieving family but don’t know what is needed. We may be facing our own death and find ourselves with unanswered questions and fears. Or we may be preparing for the death of a loved one and unsure about what they want. Congregations can be places where these conversations take place. As Jesus shows us in the raising of Lazarus, death does not have the ultimate hold on our lives. Therefore, the Church can be a place where even the most difficult issues can be discussed with grace, wisdom and compassion.

From Life to Life Eternal: Discussing Death as People of Faith is designed to help congregations discuss end-of-life issues. It is a flexible resource that can be used to fit the needs of your congregation and provides Biblically-based reflections on practical issues that many of us face at the end of our lives, such as grief and loss, funeral planning and legal preparations. This Bible study may be used for individual reflection, small group discussions and as a starting point for a sermon or class.
