Many areas in the hospital, including this main lobby, utilize solar panels and floor-to-ceiling windows to optimize intake of solar energy.

Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Yishun, Singapore, is doing things differently. Described as a “hospital in a garden and a garden in a hospital,” its mission resonates with a holistic approach to care by providing patients, visitors, and the whole community a place to rest and rejuvenate in body and mind.

For every one square meter of building space, there are three square meters of green space. Courtyards throughout the hospital provide patients, visitors and the community places to relax and rejuvenate in nature. The hospital is not only for patients and their families, but is open to the community at large, offering services such as a health corner, pharmacy, and educational activities and classes. Even the hospital infrastructure itself plays a vital role in the upkeep of the living, breathing hospital.
