Healthy Picnic Ideas

by Mary Boland

Substitute heavy, high calorie picnic staples like potato salad, creamy sauces, and hot dogs and hamburgers with tasty alternatives.

Fun with Fruit

Instead of a grabbing a bag of potato chips, grab a skewer! You can stick all your favorite summer fruits on a skewer, such as chunks of watermelon, strawberries, kiwi, and pineapple. The same can be done for vegetables, roasted or raw. Try this Honey Glazed Fruit Salad recipe.

The Deal with Dips

Creamy dips never fail to make an appearance at a picnic table, but they’re often heavy, high-caloric, and don’t keep well in the sun. Instead, try a hummus dip with veggies or pita chips. For fruit, try a yogurt based-dip, like Greek yogurt with lemon and a bit of sugar. Our Southern “Caviar” recipe is filling and refreshing.

The Meat Situation

A burger and bun may be yummy, but veggie burgers can have even greater flavor. If you’ve just got to have a hotdog or burger, try turkey or chicken meat.

Simplifying Sugar

Instead of a classic pitcher of a sugary drink, try an iced-tea recipe. Raspberry-peach iced tea incorporates black peach tea and fresh blended raspberries to create a delicious, refreshing drink. Just about any fruit and tea combination can be used, so get creative! Try one of our Splashy Summer “Mocktail” recipes.
