In the Mighty Stream of Righteousness

Before Martin Luther King, Jr. was the iconic leader of the civil rights movement, he was a Baptist preacher. He knew the Bible, and he dug past the surface to the heart of God. The cause of justice is the cause of God.

King said, “We are not satisfied and we will not be satisfied until justice rolls down like water and righteousness like a mighty stream.” He lifted the imagery from the Old Testament prophet Amos, who was a shepherd living during a time rife with social injustice. Oppression of the poor. A privileged class. Dishonesty. Prejudice.

Is it any wonder that Martin Luther King, Jr. should quote Amos?

The cause of justice is the cause of God.

New generations pursue justice in the name of the gospel. The faithful hear and answer the call. Fifty years after King’s death right here in Memphis, we look back and see two things that matter for the world. First, it seems like it was another era, with equal rights laws fresh on the books and being tested in one city at a time, in one circumstance at a time. Second, we see how much work there is still to do.

The waters of justice are not standing, stagnant water, but moving waters that usher in abundant life in their rolling power. We at Church Health are in the mighty stream. Let us hear the call to carry forward God’s cause of justice.
